Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling 2009

NOTES

Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district, consistently produces wines that rank with the worlds finest. In 1972, following an extensive search for the area most suitable to produce the best varietal wines in Australia, legendary American winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard.

Originally a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved, under the direction of Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Robert Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor. A nursery was planted in 1974 and the initial vineyards were deep-ploughed, deep-ripped, emptied of stone, planned, pegged, measured, marked and eventually planted by hand over a five year period from 1975.

TASTING NOTES

A wine of brilliant clarity, which has a very pale straw colour with lime green, tinges. The nose shows lifted aromas of citrus blossom, musk, green apple, lime and quince mixed with a delicious mineral edge, which are indicators of an excellent wine. A wine of exceptional length, the palate displays classic Rieslings flavours of lime and grapefruit and green apple. This is a wine with great intensity and depth of flavour. The palate finishes with clean crisp succulent acidity.  This is clean crisp style of wine lends itself to be enjoyed with freshly shucked oysters and also Asian dishes.

REVIEWS

Spicy, slightly spiky aromas of lime juice and lemon rind are lifted by a floral perfume. Long, taut and tangy, it’s still quite broad and generous in mid-palate before finely tapering towards a clean and brittle finish. Underpinned by chalky, powdery phenolics, it’s fresh and varietal, with a lingering impression of crisply sliced apple and citrusy acids. 90 Points, Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual, 2009

The 2007 Riesling Art Series is medium straw-colored with a complex bouquet of citrus, petrol, lemon-lime, and spring flowers. This leads to a crisp, dry wine with excellent acidity, complex flavors, and a very long, firm finish. This Trocken-styled Riesling will evolve for 5-7 years and drink well for at least a decade thereafter. 89 points."

Parker's Wine Advocate, September 2008

Powerful expression of riesling opening with a mix of bath salts, spice and lemmon blossom aromas. Palate is pure vibrancy of fresh citrus and mineral flavours. Nice wine in the short-term. 87 Points, The West Australian, Ray Jordan, Ray Jordan's WA Wine Guide 2009
