NOTES
Rutherglen has gained a reputation for making full bodied dry reds with good bottle ageing potential. The Stanton and Killeen property is sited on gently undulating picturesque farming country. It is the wonderful origins of history that make this winemaking family so important to the pioneering story of Rutherglen and the development of winemaking in Australia. Some of the original vineyards planted by Jack Stanton in 1921 are still in production and produce some of the finest fruit in the district. An very exclusive wine, as there is phyloxera in the region and local vines are quarantined from export. Matured for a total of fourteen months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak.
TASTING NOTES
Two Trophies & two Gold Ballarat and Rutherglen Wine Shows. One of Australia's finest, out of one of the world's most exclusive Durif appellations, by one of Victoria's most capable handlers of the varietal. Dense blackberry fruit, mouth-coating blackberry and chocolate flavours, very drinkable now when teamed with steak or osso bucco.
Elegant blood plum red. Nose is rich, many fruits, lively with cakey hints. It's sweet and meaty with plums, prunes and currants, mocha and violets, mint and menthol. A palate of sweet earthy, briary fruit, fine firm tannins with lingering spicy fruits and lively acids.
REVIEWS
A rare grape variety brought to northeast Victoria about the turn of the century. It makes a massively dense and potent wine, enhanced by the climate of northeast Victoria, to which it is ideally suited! James Halliday
Peppery, blackberry-scented nose, this full-bodied effort is loaded with fruit. While the finish is rustic, the wine offers plenty of flavor in a straightforward, robust format! eRobertparker.com
Really different, and really good. It's big, brawny and raw, with swathes of juicy plum and prune flavours. No shrinking violet this one, but it has great balance and finishes dry, long and only a touch warm. A top example of the rich Rutherglen style. theWiningpro.com
