NOTES
Watershed Wines has been established by a syndicate of investors, and no expense has been spared in establishing the substantial vineyard and building a striking cellar door, and a 200- seat café and restaurant. Situated towards the southern end of the Margaret River region, its neighbours include Voyager Estate and Leeuwin Estate.
The definition of watershed is 'to go to a new (higher) level of understanding; an awakening'. A second meaning is ‘a high area of land between two bodies of water'. Both meanings are appropriate to Watershed Premium Wines. The Watershed label was designed by Roland Butcher and incorporates a purple room with a four paned window on the wall. Green vines can be seen looking out of the window, however, the main focus is a ray of light streaming through the glass and diffusing across the floor, symbolizing a human being’s ‘stream of consciousness’ - a creative but almost uncontrollable thought process, spurred on by small inspirations, all leading to a final revelation, or awakening.
TASTING NOTES
The nose displays lifted citrus, grassy and guava aromas, complemented by mineral and nutty characters. On the palate this wine exhibits a complex creamy texture with a lingering crisp finish.
REVIEWS
The complex bouquet reflects 50% barrel fermentation and lees-stirring for four months, while the palate throws the emphasis onto the crisp and lively citrus, grass and passionfruit flavours which underpin the wine and drive the long finish. Gold medal Sydney Wine Show ’09. Screwcap. 12.5% alc.
Rating 94 Drink 2012 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
Standing out like a beacon among a sea of dilute, weedy and pungently herbaceous wines in a recent blind tasting, this was a very impressive wine of some power and complexity. It has a clean, nutty, sur lie overtone to its fully ripe fruit, with the merest hint of creamy oak providing an extra layer. There's also what I call a balsamic overtone that could reflect some wild-yeast fermentation (50% of it was fermented in French barrels). This all adds subtle layers of complexity without losing the distinctive fruit character of the grape variety. Gold medal, Sydney Royal Wine Show 2009. Best within a year or two.
