NOTES
On a voyage of discovery in the 1800s, the great ship 'The Astrolabe' visited the shores of Marlborough and discovered the region's significant beauty and potential. Today, its namesake has captured these qualities and created a distinctive range of wines - Astrolabe. Nurturing the attributes of the soil, vine and climate and combining these with his minimalist approach in the winery, Simon Waghorn transforms the region's grapes into stylish and expressive wines. Already with a cult following, wines from Astrolabe offer excitement, exclusivity and exceptional value.
TASTING NOTES
This Shiraz was handpicked from the best sections of our 30 acre Shiraz vineyard. After fermentation in small batch open fermenters, the wine spent 18 months in a blend of new and seasoned French and American Oak. 2006 was a great vintage and therefore we handpicked more rows of the vineyard for this wine than in previous years. This Shiraz shows lovely rich, ripe dark berry fruit on the palate with a hint of spice and black pepper. If patient, this wine will happily age for 5-10 yrs. Abundant dark fruits, with mocha fruitcake on the bouquet and palate; rich and full on the ample full-fruited finish.
PAST REVIEWS
Attractively ripe, showing dark fruit and plum-cake characteristics with mocha overtones. Opulent and satisfying. RATING 92 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009
This prime piece of vineyard has some special qualities when it comes to shiraz, making the first grade with its ripe juicy plum fruits and regional liquorice flavours. Tannins are open and welcoming, and the oak runs a toasty twist through the finish. Nicely played indeed! RATING 92 Points plus featured in the list of Best Wines $25 and under - Penguin Good Australian WIne Guide 2009
