Grosset Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2009

NOTES

Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery set in the Clare Valley producing just six highly regarded premium wines each vintage. Established in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset in the historic township of Auburn in the southern tip of the Clare Valley 100 kilometres north of Adelaide, the winery is stylish but functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned Clare Valley vineyards and to the winemaking.

TASTING NOTES

This 55:45 blend of Clare Valley Semillon and Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc is one shy of its twentieth vintage giving it a longer history than most examples of the popular early drinking blend. The wine is regarded by most critics as consistently the best, or among the best, expressions of the style. Grosset felt that the 2008 was the best vintage yet of the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and may well be a trifle embarrassed at how good the 2009 is. In quality terms, there is a hairsbreadth between the two vintages.

The 2009 Grosset Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is a trifle young at present, still a bit reserved, but with such fabulous intensity of flavour that it's hard to resist even now. There's a mini-explosion of passionfruit, guava and jackfruit flavours, pristine, refreshing and tangy, a vibrant, zesty mid-palate tautness before the tight structure leads to a finish that shows slatey, minerally overtones and bright, natural acidity. At present, it is the intensity that is the hallmark of the wine. There's complexity, succulence and finesse that will assert themselves, even in the short term. If you've loved this wine in previous years you'll be pleased that the line continues.

PAST REVIEWS

This understated wine seamlessly melds Clare Valley Semillon and Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc. The bouquet has pure lemon and lime fruit with lifted peach blossom, while the palate is fine and elegant with a driving structure of textured minerality. Its defined structure and long, finely poised finish raise it a notch above preceding vintages. 94 Points Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100 October 2009

Super-consistent Clare Valley / Adelaide Hills blend that delivers intense, complex and refreshing fruit flavours. John Fordholm, The Sunday Telegraph – ON THE GRAPEVINE, 28th September 2009

A green tinge makes an inviting introduction to this very special Clare Valley blend. It has  focused purity, rather like an essence of the fruit, with delicious lime, herb and peachy characters of lovely intensity and excellent texture. It is intense, long-tasting and pristine. Delicious. 5 Stars, Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure – The Age, September 8th 2009
