NOTES
The Hunter Valley produces some of the most regionally unique styles of wine in the world. Every variety grown has its own unique set of characters and structure that are affected significantly by the climate they enjoy, the soil they are produced from and the winemaking style I prefer. The quality of Margan is controlled from the vineyard right through to the consumer.
All of the wines are produced from Margan’s old vine, low yielding vineyards. The volcanic soils of the Fordwich Sill that nourish our vines produce excellent quality grapes that achieve optimal ripeness of flavour, colour and tannin. The wines have great texture, structure and richness which are a true expression of the vineyard they come from. Margan produce a richer, softer Hunter style of wine.
TASTING NOTES
The Beltree Vineyard was planted in the 1930’s by the Elliot family and is a typical example of a dryland Belford Semillon vineyard. Light alluvial soil on yellow clay creates wines from the Semillon variety of lean citrus austerity. Picked in the traditional low sugar manner the wines have great ageing potential. The juice was fermented under temperature controlled conditions to maintain all of its fruit characters. True to Hunter tradition, no oak is used.
With 6 years of bottle age this wine is just starting to exhibit those complex characters that Hunter Valley Semillon is famous for. Toasty, vanillin hints wrapped around a strong acid backbone are typical of the style as it ages when made from Lower Hunter fruit. Still enough citrus fruit and mineral finish to balance out the emerging middle palate and to reward further cellaring.
REVIEWS
Bright yellow-green; a great demonstration of the ability of Semillon to mature with grace under Screwcap; the lemongrass and mineral flavours are underpinned by perfect acidity, the wine still with years to go. Screwcap.10.5% alc. Rating 94 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
