NOTES
Knight’s Granite Hills one of Australia’s highest and most picturesque vineyards – perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn hills of the Great Dividing Range at 550 meters altitude, one hour (85 kms) North/Northwest of Melbourne. Granite Hills lies at the northern extremity of the Macedon Ranges wine region on Burke & Wills Track – the route taken by those famous explorers on their fateful journey north to the Gulf.
The Knight Family pioneered winemaking in the Macedon Ranges region and since planting Granite Hills in 1970, have amassed some 400 awards at Australian and International wine shows, including 20 Trophies in the last 4 years, making Granite Hills one of Victoria’s most acclaimed.
TASTING NOTES
This is the 31st consecutive vintage release from Granite Hills Estate, widely recognised as one of Australia’s finest cool climate Rieslings. The stony granite soils, high altitude and cool night temperatures impress the fruit of these 30-year-old Riesling vines with a special refinement and persistence of flavour. These qualities are nurtured through hand harvesting and gentle winemaking techniques to mould a style renowned for its definitive varietal expression, fine natural acidity and the ability to age, gaining even greater complexity with time.
OTHER NOTES
Massively concentrated and powerful by riesling standards, with remarkable length, balance and longevity. Its musky, floral perfume of lime juice and lemon overlie hnts of candy and a light spiciness. Searingly intense, its long, austere palate or pristine lime juice and lemon sherbert-like fruit is underpinned by a taut and assertive spine of tingling acidity. It finished very dry indeed. - 94 Points, Jeremy Oliver, The Australian WIne Annual 2008
The bouquet is slightly closed, though not reduced; the pure and piercing palate is driven by pple and citrus fruit, with faint echoes of spice and mineral leading into a long, vibrant finish. Screwcap. 13% Alc - 95 Points, James Halliday, The Australian Wine Companion 2008
