NOTES
The Kooyong vineyard and winery are located at Tuerong on the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, 80km south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In 1995, Kooyong was established on a gently undulating 93 hectare property neighbouring Devilbend Reserve, home to many native water birds. The Kooyong name means 'where the wild fowl gather’. Compared with more southerly vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula, Kooyong experiences a warmer, drier climate, and the light, sandy clay soil is also less vigorous than the more typical rich loam of the region. The winemaker is Sandro Mosele.
FARRAGO VINEYARD
Planted exclusively to Chardonnay; this small vineyard is situated down the slope and is protected only from the south. The soil is variable in nature from areas of very high sand content to other areas of higher clay content. The best wine comes from the clayey soils where the mineral content is highest. In fact, the soil here has a mottled appearance probably due to the high mineral content, hence the vineyard's name. The wine produced here is defined by its very linear character with strong minerality. At its best, this is the premier white wine with the greatest ageing potential.
TASTING NOTES
A brilliant pale straw colour; its bouquet is tight and bright, with crisp lemon and grapefruit notes on the nose. On the palate there is a very attractive tension to the wine, with a seam of crisp acid, and a range of restrained fruit and minerally flavours. River pebbles, cumquat, bay leaves, white peach, green apples, and honeydew melon are a few that come to mind, and there is just a touch of creaminess to the mid-palate that offsets the tautness. A very strong and pure expression of Farrago. With careful cellaring, this wine has very good potential for ageing.
REVIEWS
A generous bouquet exhibiting savoury grilled nuts, minerals and grapefruit; the palate is packed with flavour and offers an array of texture and personality; a long, generous and slightly savoury finish. Cork. 13% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2016, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
Stunning. Stunning. Stunning. Yep, I certainly go for this superfine linear style of chardonnay, with its flinty notes and focus on the citrus spectrum, especially grapefruit, but the fruit’s not the thing. It’s the superbly balanced backbone of acidity driving this: tight and minerally without being hard and sharp, quite savoury and refreshing with astonishing length. Very classy and a wine of great subtlety. Jane Faulkner, The Saturday Age – A2, 19th September 2009
