Kooyong ’Haven’ Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007 - LIMITED

NOTES

The Kooyong vineyard and winery are located at Tuerong on the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, 80km south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In 1995, Kooyong was established on a gently undulating 93 hectare property neighbouring Devilbend Reserve, home to many native water birds. The Kooyong name means 'where the wild fowl gather’. Compared with more southerly vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula, Kooyong experiences a warmer, drier climate, and the light, sandy clay soil is also less vigorous than the more typical rich loam of the region. The winemaker is Sandro Mosele.

HAVEN VINEYARD

Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. It is the most sheltered site being surrounded by treed areas protecting it from both the southerly and northerly winds. The soil is a duplex loam over clay of sedimentary origin, as is the rest of the property. The soil differs here due to a lower amount of sand and fewer sandstone pebbles being interdispersed throughout the profile. The resulting wine has an opulence and structure not found in the other vineyards due to the nature of both the site and soil. These are wines that can show great potential to age as they are remarkably well balanced.

TASTING NOTES

Dark crimson in colour; a lovely pure and expressive nose, with lots of fresh fruit, rhubarb, red berries, redcurrants, violets, satsuma plums. Fragrant through to the finish. On the palate it is very elegant and silky, balanced and harmonious, not over extracted or dense. True Pinosity with a lightness of touch. The palate feels lighter than previous Havens, with slightly more red fruit than black. Oak again is imperceptible. There is a hint of meatiness, but fresh red fruit dominates. The acid is crisp, even bracing at this early age, but there is delicacy of fruit, elegance, balance and cool fruit to suggest it will be lovely in a couple of years. With careful cellaring, this wine has very good potential for ageing.

REVIEWS

A more typical Mornington bouquet, with generous ripe cherry fruits, gentle and attractive touches of violets and spice; the palate is rich and warm, with slinky tannin, a touch of stem and ample fruit opening gracefully on the finish. Cork. 13% alc. Rating 95 Drink 2014, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010

Trademark Haven vineyard Pinot with brooding fruit at this young stage and still quite closed. Tannins are tight and almost chalky with a lingering grip through the finish, this is still a wine on the make. Chewy finish with a curious lingering smoky flavour. Rich and muscular. 92 Points, Nick Stock, Wine Business Monthly – WBM 100 April 2009
