NOTES
The Kooyong vineyard and winery are located at Tuerong on the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, 80km south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In 1995, Kooyong was established on a gently undulating 93 hectare property neighbouring Devilbend Reserve, home to many native water birds. The Kooyong name means 'where the wild fowl gather’. Compared with more southerly vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula, Kooyong experiences a warmer, drier climate, and the light, sandy clay soil is also less vigorous than the more typical rich loam of the region. The winemaker is Sandro Mosele.
TASTING NOTES
A vibrant pale straw colour; a touch of struck match on the nose is followed by classic varietal aromas of pear, white peach, and a hint of musk. The palate has some richness of texture but is relatively restrained for Pinot Gris, without the broadness that the variety can show. The flavours flow across the palate nicely, ending with the merest hint of sweetness. It is eminently drinkable, with a juicy mid-palate, good fruit intensity, and excellent balance, which can be elusive in Gris.
REVIEWS
A pinot gris that has been given the full treatment, so much so its varietal origin is all but lost, but very good texture compensates. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2012, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
What a remarkable debut for this label. Sandro Mosele has crafted a subtle, complex, gloriously textural wine that remains restrained and taut. It treads a cunning path between minerally, pear-drop fruit savoury, wild-ferment notes and a sniff of smoky barrel ferment. Tony Harper, Brisbane News – Top Drop 15-21 July 2009
