Imported Red Wines > Austria >

Pittnauer Zweigelt Klassik 2006

NOTES

This is a producer at the cutting edge of red wine production in all of Europe. It has been 15 years since Brigitte and Gerhard Pittnauer took over the winery in Gols near Lake Neusiedel in Burgenland, at the eastern extremity of Austria bordering with Hungary. With only 3.8 hectares of vineyards they took over from Gerhard’s parents and dared to jump in at the proverbial deep end. In 2001 the construction of the striking and individually designed production hall in the middle of the vineyards allowed for a “quantum jump” as far as quality and quantity is concerned. Today the Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer winery ranks among Austria’s rising red wine producers.

TASTING NOTES

Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture in Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt (who was later to become the director of this institute). It was a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria. Fleshy and a touch meaty it is every bit a ‘drinking’ wine that responds well to air and again offers a real breadth of diversity for lists.
