NOTES
The Moss family began their Margaret River vineyard in 1984 with a lot of expertise on side. Senior Moss, Jeff, had been growing grapes his whole life and David Moss had worked at both Houghton and Moss Wood for a number of years in both the vineyards and wineries.
Peter Moss, engineer, made stainless steel tanks and winery equipment including whole wineries and boutique breweries. Jane Moss studied wine making and grape growing at Roseworthy Agricultural College, Australia's leading wine science university. David had concepts about wine styles, and, the vineyard was planted with these in mind. The original line-up was Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, Chardonnay and the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend.
TASTING NOTES
Deep red with a purple hue; an ever enticing bouquet of plum, cherry with spicy pepper and toasty oak; Plush with dark cherries and white pepper on the palate along with, truffles and choc flavours, supported by silky tannins and balancing acidity. An interesting wine to drink now or cellar for a two to five years for further complexity.
REVIEWS
2005 Moss Brothers Shiraz is beginning to show really attractive bottle-age, which is adding cedar and charcuterie complexions. Hooke thought the wine showed 'excellent ripeness and the appropriate amount of development. Roasted meats, char and smoky oak on the nose. Earth and black cherry. Lovely finesse, intensity and elegance.' I found the concentration and the balance of the firm tannins impressive. The wine will continue to develop well for several years. “This shiraz has all the hallmarks of a superb wine. There’s an enticing softness and generosity on the palate which has an appealing suppleness. Ray Jordan, The West Australian Newspaper
In a word, this Shiraz is mesmerizing. In a few more words, it’s a fantastic indication of the quality of fruit picked in the Margaret River’s 2005 vintage. It’s crammed with sweet cherry and pepper flavours, supported by supple tannins, which give the wine great length and freshness. Christian Gaffey, Wine Selectors
