NOTES
The ultimate Peter Lehmann Wines expression of Barossa Shiraz. Stonewell is an internationally acclaimed Shiraz made from the finest, most concentrated fruit of each vintage. Stonewell Shiraz is marked by intense flavour, strength, opulence, a velvety finish and remarkable longevity.
Stonewell Shiraz is Peter Lehmann Wines best wine of each vintage and one of the world’s great Shiraz. It is the most powerful expression of Shiraz we make from our growers’ vineyards. The pedigree of these vineyards and the knowledge that has been passed from each winemaking generation at Peter Lehmann Wines to the next, assures us these will be wines of great longevity.
The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz.
This tradition has continued and each vintage the best Shiraz from our legacy of growers’ Barossa vineyards is chosen to create Stonewell. Usually no more than a dozen small, old vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. Located in the harder country, these are some of our lowest yielding vineyards. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 2 tonnes per acre.
TASTING NOTES
Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. The nose shows lashings of dark plums and chocolate with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, with intense depth of fruit reined in by the firm tannins. As befits a wine made in strictly limited quantities, this is a wine for posterity and may be cellared with confidence.
REVIEWS
Bright colour; dark and tarry on the surface, the bouquet reveals a vibrant, pure and poised core of black fruit interlaced with well-handled oak; the palate is dense and chewy, but shows a deft hand of balance between the elements of fruit, tannin, acid and the slight savoury complexity; very long and quite tannic, time will treat this wine with kindness. Cork.14.3% alc. Rating 96 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2010
Opaque purple-colored, it delivers an enticing bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, smoked meat, and blueberry. It has a firm entry onto the palate followed by layers of sweet, savory fruit. Balanced, with excellent depth and concentration. 92 Points, Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (USA), Issue #181, February 2009
