Sandalford’s 2008 Margaret River Range Shiraz, which sells for $25 a bottle, won the best dry red table wine gong at the National Wine Show in Canberra tonight. Sandalford shared the spoils with wine giant Penfolds, which claimed the best table wine of the show, and best white table wine, for its 2008 Reserve Bin 08A chardonnay, to be released in May next year with a $90 a bottle price tag.
Leading wine authority and guest judge Matthew Jukes, from the United Kingdom, described the awards as the best in the world. ‘‘The standard of the wines is absolutely epic - it’s the best show in Australia and therefore the best wine show in the world,’’ Mr Jukes said. ‘‘The wines that have got up are absolutely outstanding - truly, truly world class.’’ Sourced from WAtoday.com.au, 19th November 2009
TASTING NOTES
A blend of 89% Shiraz, 7% Viognier and 4% Malbec...Classic dark cherry red with a solid magenta hue leads to a nose with a gorgeous fruit lift to this wine with bags of fresh briary berries and some deeper, more dense, savoury notes. Think clove and cinnamon. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with lovely ripe dark juicy flavours, spicy elements, soft marshmallow like tannins and great length. A real fruit-driven wine but complex enough to satisfy the most ardent Shiraz and serious red wine drinker. Will cellar well for up to 10 years.
