McHenry Hohnen 3 Amigos White 2007

NOTES

David Hohnen is well-known in the wine industry for his development of both the Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay brands, and has forged a formidable reputation as a pioneer and innovator. His latest wine venture is in partnership with his brother-in-law Murray McHenry, his daughter Freya and her partner, winemaker Ryan Walsh. They have planted a wide range of alternative varieties from southern France and Spain which are proving to be well suited to the area. In 2007, David Hohnen received the inaugural Len Evans award for Leadership.

TASTING NOTES

The primo amigo in this trio is Marsanne, grown at the McLeod Creek and Calgardup Brook vineyards. Chardonnay is sourced from Rocky Road and the third amigo, Roussanne, is grown at McLeod Creek. These vineyards lie in the southern half of the Margaret River wine region which has a strong maritime influence from the Great Southern Ocean.

2007 was a vintage that gave us tremendous intensity of fruit and wonderful natural acidity. The nose is a blend of peach and nectarine characters derived from chardonnay, underlaid with dried apple, cedar and crushed almond which come from the other two amigos in the blend as well as some French oak influence. Marsanne is dominant on the palate, its richness and weight harnessed by the more elegant Roussanne. A soft sorbet acid completes the palate, leaving it refreshed and ready for the next sip. Served slightly chilled.

REVIEWS

Deep colour; a nutty, complex bouquet, with ripe grapefruit and straw coming to the fore; thickly textured with a savoury undertone that delivers a different drinking experience from the norm. Marsanne/Chardonnay/Roussanne. Screwcap.13.5% alc. Rating 90, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009

A full-flavoured blend of Marsanne, Chardonnay and Roussanne from Margaret River. It tastes of honeyed nuts and is butterscotchy in the mouth, but becomes deliciously refreshing when tackling something simple and fishy like grilled whiting drizzled with lemon. Max Allen, The Weekend Australian
