NOTES
David Hohnen is well-known in the wine industry for his development of both the Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay brands, and has forged a formidable reputation as a pioneer and innovator. His latest wine venture is in partnership with his brother-in-law Murray McHenry, his daughter Freya and her partner, winemaker Ryan Walsh. They have planted a wide range of alternative varieties from southern France and Spain which are proving to be well suited to the area. In 2007, David Hohnen received the inaugural Len Evans award for Leadership.
TASTING NOTES
Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Calgardup Brook vineyard in the south of the Margaret River region. The Calgardup is a westerly flowing stream, hence the site is open to the sea breezes that have a significant influence on the vineyards of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge, the hills that connect the two Capes on the south and north extremes of the region. Soils are deep, loamy gravels typical of valley bottoms and ideal for chardonnay which does best in moderately fertile and well protected sites.
A soft nose shows hints of kaffir leaf and mandarin peel. The subtle use of oak gives sweet entry into a generously textured mid-palate. Limey flavours show in a tightly structured finish that truly reflects the minerality of the Calgardup Brook site. An elegant wine made honestly by a philosophy of minimal intervention.
REVIEWS
Light straw-green; an extremely bright, fresh and lively wine, the fruit and oak seamlessly interwoven on the long and focused palate; is almost painfully youthful, but the future is undoubted. Screwcap.13.5% alc. Rating 95, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
