McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Chardonnay 2008

NOTES

David Hohnen is well-known in the wine industry for his development of both the Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay brands, and has forged a formidable reputation as a pioneer and innovator. His latest wine venture is in partnership with his brother-in-law Murray McHenry, his daughter Freya and her partner, winemaker Ryan Walsh. They have planted a wide range of alternative varieties from southern France and Spain which are proving to be well suited to the area. In 2007, David Hohnen received the inaugural Len Evans award for Leadership.

TASTING NOTES

Fruit is sourced from the Rocky Road vineyard which lies in the headwaters of the Chapman Brook, near Witchcliffe in the south of the Margaret River region. With a northerly aspect, the vines enjoy long days of sunshine, moderated by the vineyard's southern location. All vines on the McHenry Hohnen vineyards are grown on a single bilateral cordon with a vertically trained canopy. It is a simple and practical format that maximises light penetration and maintains a balanced vine.

With its aromas of orange zest and freshly shelled cashew, this wine shows elegance and restraint. Separate batches of fruit from the top and bottom of the valley are fermented separately and then blended to provide a creamy clay overlay on the mineral notes that are characteristic of the Rocky Road site. The result is a tight lemon curd palate supported by lingering notes of candied peel and ginger.

REVIEWS

Light straw-green; while it shares many of the characters of Calgardup Brook, the fruit is a little more evident, the acidity a little softer, and will likely develop a little quicker. Screwcap.13.5% alc. Rating 95, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
