NOTES
David Hohnen is well-known in the wine industry for his development of both the Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay brands, and has forged a formidable reputation as a pioneer and innovator. His latest wine venture is in partnership with his brother-in-law Murray McHenry, his daughter Freya and her partner, winemaker Ryan Walsh. They have planted a wide range of alternative varieties from southern France and Spain which are proving to be well suited to the area. In 2007, David Hohnen received the inaugural Len Evans award for Leadership.
TASTING NOTES
Fruit is sourced from the Rocky Road vineyard which lies in the headwaters of the Chapman Brook, near Witchcliffe in the south of the Margaret River region. With a northerly aspect, the vines enjoy long days of sunshine, moderated by the vineyard’s southern location.
Dried and crushed blackcurrants over brandied fruitcake make this sarsaparilla blend a spicy but sweet combination. Fleshy tannins are found upfront in a mouthful of tangy raspberry bon bon and grape pastille. The palate lingers with flavours of dried fruit panforte. A mid weight deep red wine; alluring with its intensity and sensory pleasure.
REVIEWS
Zinfandel is a variety normally associated with California in the form of 16%+ jammy, alcoholic monsters, so I was dubious when offered this by winemaker David Hohnen during a recent trip to London. I shouldn't have been worried though; Hohnen, who before starting this winery with his daughter Freya and brother-in-law Murray McHenry, founded and nurtured Margaret River's Cape Mentelle and Marlborough's icon Cloudy Bay, is a man that knows wine. At a tame - almost elegant - 14%abv, this is all pure, primary, crushed raspberry fruit. Very lush and ripe, with enough acidity to balance and sweet teasing spices. This vintage is due to the market in August, and puts many Californian Zin to shame. Enjoy with venison or game birds.
