NOTES
Weingut Bründlmayer is situated in Langenlois, some 70 km north-west of Vienna, upstream along the Danube in the Lower Austrian Kamp Valley. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel protect the vineyards from the cold north-westerly winds. During the day, the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night the fresh, fragrant forest air drifts through the Kamp Valley into the Langenloiser Arena.
The mostly terraced vineyards situated far from road traffic are unique in their diversity. Willi Bründlmayer attaches great importance to the ecological balance. Exclusively organic fertilizers are used in the vineyards. The natural resources – soil, sun, water, plants – are employed simply and intelligently. People tend and graft, but do not force themselves into the foreground. Exhausted vineyards are dug out and left fallow for five years to allow the soil to recover.
TASTING NOTES
The Bründlmayer family owns 10 hectares on the Zöbinger Heiligenstein. 9 hectares are planted with Riesling, the remainder with Cabernet. From a geological point of view the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on the estate: the soil consists of desert sandstone with volcanic inclusions and is approximately 270 Million years old. The qualities of this soil provide the ideal precondition for growing outstanding wines.
Brilliant clean nose, elder berry flowers and fresh exotic fruits like citrus, abricots, peaches, and tangerines, crisp and tightly structured, multi-layered texture, powerful yet very elegant, fresh on the palate, here also flavors of citrus, stone fruit with flowery and spicy components; direct yet complex, very long mineral finish; exceptional wine. Classic Austrian cuisine, well-seasoned fish and white meat, Asian dishes, duck; as the wine matures it will do very well with fish in cream sauces, As well as with all types of exotic cuisine.
