NOTES
Weingut Bründlmayer is situated in Langenlois, some 70 km north-west of Vienna, upstream along the Danube in the Lower Austrian Kamp Valley. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel protect the vineyards from the cold north-westerly winds. During the day, the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night the fresh, fragrant forest air drifts through the Kamp Valley into the Langenloiser Arena.
The mostly terraced vineyards situated far from road traffic are unique in their diversity. Willi Bründlmayer attaches great importance to the ecological balance. Exclusively organic fertilizers are used in the vineyards. The natural resources – soil, sun, water, plants – are employed simply and intelligently. People tend and graft, but do not force themselves into the foreground. Exhausted vineyards are dug out and left fallow for five years to allow the soil to recover.
TASTING NOTES
The soil of this single vineyard is different than any other site on our estate and similar to Chateau Petrus in Pomerol. Situated on a rise of marine deposits 300 m above sea level this exposed soil decomposed over the ages to create sandy clay. This soil produces an extremely potent wine, but is difficult to work. Necessary plowing can be done only during certain periods, when it is neither too dry nor too wet.
Delicate toasty, smoky and honey aromas, followed by grapefruit pineapple, and pears, with peppery spicy tines of herbs and fir tree, at the beginning soft and silky, then sappy and powerful, tightly structured, multilayered, with a firm grip and exotic fruit on the palate (pineapples and citrus fruits) appetizing extract sweetness, well-balanced, very good length and a soft , mineral peppery finish, very good aging potential.
