NOTES
The origins of the Courbis family estate date back to the 16th century. More recently, the brothers Dominique and Laurent Courbis have succeeded their father, Maurice, who was the mayor of Chateaubourg, their hometown. The estate owns 20 hectares divided as follows; 3ha in Cornas, 4ha of St. Joseph, and 13ha of St. Joseph Rouge. The holdings include the steep terraced cru ‘Les Royes’, on the south-east facing limestone soils at the southern limit of the St. Joseph appellation and two very small, steep terraced parcels in Cornas – La Sabarotte and Champelrose – with extremely old vines on granite soils.
TASTING NOTES
From the vineyards vinified at a grower's domaine, this is the most southern site, situated 8 km from Tournon, at the intersection of the rivers Rhône and Isère, on the 45th parallel. Deep ruby colour; Black fruit aromas with some elements of burnt fat & caramel. Tinges of orange peel and strawberry give it a very interesting, minerally nose. Tart red raspberry & strawberry flavors with good back end sweetness & a nice herbal finish. Pronounced black pepper on the palate.
REVIEWS
Ripe and muscular, with lots of black cherry, current and tar flavours followed by graphite, mineral and tobacco notes. The long finish has great stony intensity. Drink now through 2014. 91 Points, Wine Spectator Magazine
