Domaine Courbis Cornas ’La Sabarotte’ 2005

NOTES

The origins of the Courbis family estate date back to the 16th century. More recently, the brothers Dominique and Laurent Courbis have succeeded their father, Maurice, who was the mayor of Chateaubourg, their hometown. The estate owns 20 hectares divided as follows; 3ha in Cornas, 4ha of St. Joseph, and 13ha of St. Joseph Rouge. The holdings include the steep terraced cru ‘Les Royes’, on the south-east facing limestone soils at the southern limit of the St. Joseph appellation and two very small, steep terraced parcels in Cornas – La Sabarotte and Champelrose – with extremely old vines on granite soils.

TASTING NOTES

100% Syrah; Situated on the right bank of the river Rhône, not far from the city of Valence, the site of Cornas combines the factors for what would be called a 'Grand Terroir'. Its exceptional microclimate, granitic soils and old vine material are the outstanding factors allowing it to successfully produce great wines. Its colour is a ruby opaque; Nose of dark fruits, spice, cedar, smoke and dark cured meats. Palate was full of black currants, licorice and a hint of smoke and also traces of roasted beef. Tannins well integrated with a medium finish. Very smooth and enjoyable.

REVIEWS

Dark, brawny and very tight, with a large core of bramble, blueberry, blackberry, olive and sage notes wound up by an iron-fisted finish. Totally backward now but shows terrific length and density. Should blossom with cellaring. Best from 2009 to 2018. 94 Points, Wine Spectator Magazine
