NOTES
Not only is Tasmania Australia’s most picturesque, best kept secret, but its gentle climate is ideal for the propagation of some of Australia’s most succulent fruit and bountiful vines – ideal for the production of fine wines. Kate is keen to exploit all the possibilities of Tasmania’s cool climate fruit and to make memorable and affordable wines for all consumers.
Kate is no stranger to the world of wine. She learned her trade over ten years ago in South Australia, France, California and Chile. She was an executive winemaker with Orlando Wyndham for four years at their Riverina winery and has a number of gold medal wines to her credit. Kate’s experience in Tasmania includes working with Stefano Lubiana Wines and work with contract winemaker Winemaking Tasmania. She has established herself as a wine consultant and educator at Hobart’s Drysdale Institute and has now embarked as an independent winemaker.
Having made her new home in Tasmania, Kate has set about the task of building her new business. She has begun with producing both a Riesling and Pinot Noir but plans are underway to expand her range to include a sparkling Pinot-Chardonnay.
TASTING NOTES
Kate’s 2009 Tasmanian Riesling – crafted from carefully selected grapes from the Southern Tasmania’s Derwent and Coal River valleys, the gentle climate and late 2009 ripening season have produced a powerful wine an intense citrus character and a soft, dry finish. At around 10 grams residual sugar, the wine imitates the fine Rieslings from the Mosel but its linear line of acidity ensures the wine finishes dry. A fine complement to seafood and some spicy Asian dishes.
REVIEWS
Delicate but lingering passionfruit and lime; very good balance, line and length; marked contrast to the more aggressive acidity of young Tasmanian Rieslings. Gold medal Tas Wine Show ’09. Screwcap. 95 Points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010 (2008 Vintage – 2009 Not yet reviewed)
