Flametree Shiraz 2008

NOTES

Flametree Wines (est. 2007) is the long-held dream of the Perth-based Towner family, who have been involved in the Margaret River wine region for many years. Their philosophy is to select parcels of the best fruit available to create beautifully crafted wines which capture flavour, structure and depth.

These three elements are represented in the three leaves within the brand’s logo. To produce great wine, all elements must come together under the right condition, which is how the flame tree holds special significance; this spectacular Australian native tree comes into full flower only when all conditions are favourable.

Flametree Wines was catapulted into winemaking folklore after winning Australia's most prestigious wine award the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its first ever red wine, the 2007 Cabernet Merlot.  Proving that this wasn't just good luck the 2008 Cabernet Merlot was again a finalist in this year's Jimmy Watson trophy taste off.  James Halliday's 2010 Wine Companion ranked Flametree Wines in his Top 10 New and Exciting wineries, giving great reviews across the complete range.

Recent accolades include winning the trophy at the Margaret River Wine Show for the best Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, no mean feat given the quality and quantity of the wines entered. Highly respected Margaret River winemaker Cliff Royle was appointed as Chief Winemaker and General Manager in August 2009. He comes to Flametree after twelve years as Chief Winemaker at Voyager Estate.

TASTING NOTES

Matured in a combination of French and American oak for a period of 12 months. Opaque black dark purple colour with a deep dark purple hue. Aromas of blackberry, liquorice, plum and spice excite the senses. The medium to full bodied the palate displays good weight with flavours of blackberry, liquorice, blackpepper and spice.  Fine grained slightly dryish tannins provide the wine with good structure and plenty of length.

REVIEWS

Bright crimson; has a strong spicy component to the plummy bouquet, the medium-bodied palate adding licorice and dark cherry before fine, persistent tannins add a third dimension with their savoury character; oak present but not distracting. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Rating 95 Drink 2020 $25 Date Tasted Sep 09; James Halliday Wine Companion

Flametree is a producer with a bullet. Classically regional. A mouth filling wine with firm but open-weave tannins, liquorice, chocolate and spice, and yummy black fruits. Has some savoury, earthy accents too. Lovely wine. Super value. Beautifully put together and not over-made. You have to swoon at least a little over this – if not a lot. Drink: 2010-2017; Value: 5 Stars * * * * *; Price: $25; Seal: Screwcap; Score: 94 Points; Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh, The Big Red Wine Book 2010/11, June 2010
