NOTES
Flametree Wines (est. 2007) is the long-held dream of the Perth-based Towner family, who have been involved in the Margaret River wine region for many years. Their philosophy is to select parcels of the best fruit available to create beautifully crafted wines which capture flavour, structure and depth.
These three elements are represented in the three leaves within the brand’s logo. To produce great wine, all elements must come together under the right condition, which is how the flame tree holds special significance; this spectacular Australian native tree comes into full flower only when all conditions are favourable.
Flametree Wines was catapulted into winemaking folklore after winning Australia's most prestigious wine award the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its first ever red wine, the 2007 Cabernet Merlot. Proving that this wasn't just good luck the 2008 Cabernet Merlot was again a finalist in this year's Jimmy Watson trophy taste off. James Halliday's 2010 Wine Companion ranked Flametree Wines in his Top 10 New and Exciting wineries, giving great reviews across the complete range.
Recent accolades include winning the trophy at the Margaret River Wine Show for the best Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, no mean feat given the quality and quantity of the wines entered. Highly respected Margaret River winemaker Cliff Royle was appointed as Chief Winemaker and General Manager in August 2009. He comes to Flametree after twelve years as Chief Winemaker at Voyager Estate.
TASTING NOTES
This wine is produced with the best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. A dense, purple-crimson colour; a concentrated fruit driven wine with flavours of dark fruit and wild berries. A wonderfully balanced palate and tannin structure provide great length and persistence to the finish. This wine will benefit from cellaring for 5+ years.
REVIEWS
Dense purple-crimson; has all the depth and concentration one could possibly wish for, oozing blackcurrant and licorice, the tannins and 18 months in French oak providing structural integrity. The ’standard’ Flametree cabernet merlot won last year’s Jimmy Watson Trophy and lo and behold, they have a higher grade cabernet (or at least higher-priced). I hope they stood up at the award ceremony and said, You call THAT a cabernet? THIS is a cabernet …And it is a far superior wine to the standard release. This is really good booze. It’s thick and chocolatey, pencilly and long. It has lots of velvety tannin and a curranty, earthen character that is ripe but not overtly sweet. Cabernet is such a superior grape to Shiraz - you find yourself nodding smugly, knowingly, at yourself as you drink this. The Jimmy Watson Trophy was one thing … this wine is actually the goods.
