Bests Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

NOTES

Founded in 1866 in the Great Western wine region of Victoria, Best’s Great Western is one of Australia’s oldest continuously family owned and operated wineries.  Until the 1950’s, Best’s red wines were labelled Claret and the white wines were labelled Hock and they were bottled for customers both in Australia and overseas on demand. In the 1960’s, Best’s began to release varietal labelled vintage wines.

If Great Western were somehow prohibited from growing Shiraz, it would probably be just as famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon.  Intense spicy, berry, leafy aromas and long, dense, yet supple flavours and classic structure are hallmarks of Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon. With age, they develop remarkable finesse and elegance.

Cabernet Sauvignon from Great Western works well from the right sites, warmer and north facing sites tend to produce the best fruit. As is common in other regions, Cabernet Sauvignon in Great Western is picked late in the vintage season to allow for good fruit flavour and texture.

TASTING NOTES

Deep red with purple hues; a bouquet of lifted varietal characters with hints of dried herbs, violets, cigar box and mocha. This wine is classically structured Cabernet, with some aromatic red berry, dried herbs and cigar box characters. Mid weight and refined in structure, this Cabernet will benefit from decanting before service. Stored correctly, this wine is great drinking now and you would be rewarded by your patience.

REVIEWS

Good crimson-purple; little more than light- to medium-bodied, but has very fresh cassis/blackcurrant fruit running through the length of the palate, the tannins a mere wisp. Screwcap.14% alc. Rating 92 Drink 2018 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
