NOTES
Founded in 1866 in the Great Western wine region of Victoria, Best’s Great Western is one of Australia’s oldest continuously family owned and operated wineries. Until the 1950’s, Best’s red wines were labelled Claret and the white wines were labelled Hock and they were bottled for customers both in Australia and overseas on demand. In the 1960’s, Best’s began to release varietal labelled vintage wines.
A real insider’s wine, Great Western produces flavoursome, elegantly structured, spectacularly age-worthy Rieslings which stand confidently alongside their more famous South Australian cousins. The Great Western region lends itself well to producing exceptional Riesling – diurnal weather patterns work well for the varietal. Some of the original nursery plantings can be traced back to Germany so there is great history and pedigree in the root stock of Great Western Riesling.
Grown on the sandy loams of the Concongella Creek and the Rhymney Vineyard sites, and occasionally from selected local vineyards, the Great Western Riesling shows the power and finesse which speak of this region. The wine is made to show good flavour characteristics, letting the pristine fruit speak for itself. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks and made to drink now, although it will definitely age for some time to come. Best’s Great Western Rieslings from the 1970’s are drinking superbly now.
In 2003 at the Sydney Royal Wine Show, the 2003 Best’s Great Western Riesling won the prestigious Bert Bear Memorial Trophy for the best young white table wine. The 2005 Great Western Riesling was awarded a gold medal from the 2005 Royal Hobart International Wine Show and the 2006 Great Western Riesling was also recently awarded a ‘Top’ gold medal from the 2006 Wrest Point Royal Hobart International Wine Show.
TASTING NOTES
Pristine condition with bright green hues; leads to a bouquet of fresh flowers along with lime and citrus notes. On the tongue it displays a flavoursome front palate with great varietal intensity. Minerality, balance and texture all work together harmoniously. This wine has previously shown an ability to gain further complexity and aged regional characters as time goes by. Drink to 2020
REVIEWS
Marries generosity of fruit flavour with a tight, focused finish; the flavours are of ripe citrus, verging ontropical, and the wine will develop smoothly over the next few years. Screwcap.12% alc. Rating 93 Drink 2018 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
