COMMENTS
The Glenfiddich distillery lies on the river whose name it bears. "Fiddich" refers to the fact that the river runs through a valley inhabited by deers – hence the companys logo which features a stag. A proportion of the whisky in this version of Glenfiddich is supposedly even older than the label suggests.
Glenfiddich is not only the world's best-selling malt whisky, it is the whisky which introduced the world to the pleasures of single malt. Above all, Glenfiddich's success is attributable to the fact that it is the most 'accessible' malt and easy to drink at any time of the day.
TASTING NOTES: Deep gold in colour. Elegant nose displaying apple and honey. Medium weight with soft, round body. The palate is undeniably influenced by the time spent in Oloroso Sherry casks – with sherry characteristics dominating. Sweet, sophisticated and perfectly balanced, Glenfiddich 18 Y.O. finishes nutty, with just a hint of smoke. 40% alc./vol.
TASTING NOTES…another nail in the coffin of those who sniffilly insist that Glenfiddich can’t make good whisky. Taste this – and the Solera Reserve – then find me two distillery bottled malts of this age on Speyside that offers this enormity of complexity and sheer elan. Rating: 92
