NOTES
Harvested on the 17th March 2004 from Block 22 of the Amery vineyard, the grapes were traditionally processed (open fermentation and basket pressed) and aged in American oak casks for 23 months prior to bottling.
TASTING NOTES
The colour, a deep purple hue, it displays a delicate nose of lifted, perfumed violets and floral notes combined with mint leaf and carraway seeds. It leads into a full bodied palate with rich, ripe blackcurrant and mulberry flavours overlapped with a vein of black olive, capsicum, oak and mint. An elegantly finessed, powerful, fruit dominated Cabernet (the well integrated American oak plays a supporting role) with seamless fine tannin structure and balancing acidity and a delightfully long flavoousome palate length. Ready for immediate enjoyment or can be cellared confidently for 6+ years.
OTHER NOTES
For example, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Amery (made from 10 year old vines and aged, in both American barrels and hogsheads) exhibits beautifully sweet, slightly herbaceous black currant fruit intermixed with notes of damp earth and truffles. Medium to full-bodied with supple tannin as well as a lovely mouthfeel, it should drink well for 7-10 years.
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate Issue 167 October 2006 - 89 Points
Aromas of blackberry, currants, molasses, mint and cedar oak. Plenty to sniff at here. On the palate full bodied with leathery mulberry and blackcurrant fruit and savoury earthy black olive flavours. A very dry wine driven by savoury dark fruit and plenty of ferrous earthy tannin. Long black olive finish. It tastes like a Kay’s wine which of course means that it is savoury, regional and quite delicious.
