Red Wine > Shiraz & Blends > The Black Chook Shiraz Viognier 2007
|
NOTES
A collaboration between Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson of Penny’s Hill, Black Chook is the bigger sibling at Woop Woop. Shiraz is sourced from good vineyards in McLaren Vale, sites that are nourished by a Mediterranean climate, winter dominant rainfall, warm, dry summers and low humidity. The Viognier portion comes off the Angas Vineyard in Langhorne Creek, a region that in recent years has seen the development of sites which yield white grapes with intense varietal expressions. Co-fermenting small amounts of Viognier skins with Shiraz adds a wonderful apricot perfume, at the same time as intensifying the deep rich colour and velvety mouthfeel of the wine.
TASTING NOTES
Outfitted with a bosom of sweet perfumes, apricots and marmalade, raspberry, violet and Turkish delight, it steals the show with a warm palate of bitter chocolate, cherry and pepper. Velvety textured with bright, alert tannins and subdued but supportive, spicy/ cocoa oak, it finishes like a dream to lingering impressions of light florals and red licorice, cranberry and cola.
