Brokenwood Shiraz 2002
|
COMMENTS
Vintage 2002 is widely regarded as one of the best on record, possibly eclipsing 1998. Yields were also up slightly. Beechworth makes its first appearance and this has become a very important quality region for us.
VINIFICATION
Combination open and roto red fermenters, 3-4 day small % finish in oak, 100% mlf pure inoculation, 75% American oak of which ˝ new, balance 1-2 year old, 25% older French, in oak 18 months.
TASTING NOTES Very good depth of colour and keeping youthful purple tints. Soft dark chocolate/cherry ripe characters from the McLaren Vale fruit. Background mint (Padthaway) and red cherry (Beechworth) compliment the McLaren Vale. Subtle oak with a char edge. Great complexity, confirming the best of the different regions, rich and sweet upfront with ripe tannins on the finish. Drink now or over the next 3-6 years.
FOOD Lamb, veal and pasta.
