Mount Langi Ghiran ’Cliff Edge’ Shiraz 2005

NOTES

The Mount Langi vineyards are nestled between two dramatically beautiful mountain ranges on the southern edge of the Great Dividing Range. A 540 metre cliff face towers over the vineyard at Mount Langi Ghiran. Cliff Edge is made from fully mature vines which sit at the very edge of cool climate Shiraz territory. To infuse marvellous complexity and enhance the ruddy fruit, Mount Langi puts the Cliff Edge into new and older French and American oaks for eighteen months. Mixing of oaks from different regions, countries and coopers by winemaker Trevor Mast gives complexity to the wine. A blend of sweeter American oak with the tighter French barrels translates into many interesting combinations.

TASTING NOTES

Warm, deep dark purple colour. The bouquet is fresh with punnets of mixed market fresh berries, both sweet and sour, cinnamon and spices from the oak which give way to savoury Mediterranean expressions, olive and bay leaf and rosemary. A meaty palate of mushrooms and pepper, liquorice and cranberry, all cloistered by gritty chocolatey oak, the tang of parched Grampians acid maintains the wine’s vivacity.

REVIEWS

Similar in many ways to Billi Billi, but with a riper fruit spectrum and much more juicy plum and spice fruit on the finish; controlled oak too.  Screwcap 14.5° alc. 94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion 2009
