Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc 2008

VINTAGE
Marlborough experienced a drier than average year with the accumulated growing degree-days slightly higher than the long-term medium. This was attributed to unusually warm nights and days over the ripening period. The warmer ripening period meant that harvest began 10-12 days earlier than expected.

VINEYARDS
The fruit for this wine was sourced from many vineyards in Marlborough, throughout the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. This range of mesoclimates produces an array of flavour profiles to the winemaker which ensures a continuity of style. The majority of the vineyards are grown on the VSP (Vertical Shoot Positioning) training method and special care is taken to maintain vine health, clean fruit and vine balance.

WINEMAKING
The fruit parcels were harvested at varying levels of ripeness (between 21-24 brix) over a four week period. The fruit was crushed, pressed and cold settled at 6°C for 24 hours before being racked clean off lees for fermentation. Aromatic yeast strains were used to inoculate the clear juice. The fermentation was conducted at 12-14°C to maximise retention of delicate flavour and aromatics.

TASTING NOTES
This Sauvignon Blanc is bursting with ripe gooseberry, citrus lime, melon and exotic herbal aromas. It is a fresh and ripely flavoured wine with fantastic intensity, finishing with crisp and racy acidity.
