THE FRUIT
With a booty of 17 Gold Medals to date, Grant Burge's Filsell vineyard, bearing century-old vines, is considered one of the best in the Barossa, consistently yielding fruit of great intensity and concentration. Grant Burge's Shiraz success has been built on the quality of fruit available from the prized Filsell vineyard. Not only do these near century old vines power the revered and highly sought after $100 flagship Meshach, they underpin the success of Burge's appropriately-labelled Filsell Shiraz.
The 2004 vintage saw near perfect growing conditions with a mild January and warmer February proving ideal for producing fruit with the richness and intensity for a stand-out vintage. The fruit was handpicked at 14º Baume.
TASTING NOTES
This exceptional Barossan Shiraz is rich, ruby red in colour, with a complex, perfumed nose of dark berries, oak, rich chocolate and a hint of liquorice. These luscious flavours dominate on the palate, which has a very appealing structure with firm tannins and balanced integrated oak and clean acidity. The finish is long and elegant, rounding off a wine of terrific finesse. The wine is drinking well now, and has cellaring potential for up to 15 years. This wine deserves an equally impressive food match, such as fillet of beef with olive polenta, or smoked venison with a rich tomato chutney.
OTHER NOTES
The 2004 Shiraz “Filsell” is a single vineyard, old vine cuvee which was barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in American oak. Purple in color, it exhibits aromas of cedar, spice box, tobacco, blueberry, and blackberry. It has ample ripe fruit, good depth, and enough structure to evolve for several years. Grant Burge and Burge Family Winemakers have a familial but not philosophical connection. One is big, the other an artisanal, hands-on operation. Not that big is bad as this Grant Burge lineup demonstrated.” 90 Points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #173 Oct 2007
A typically elegant and sweetly fruit Lyndoch Shiraz whose wild, heady and alluring perfume of small dark fruits, musk, cloves and black pepper overlie meaty nuances of dark olives and dark chocolate/vanilla oak. On one hand, it is sumptuous and richly fruited, with deep flavours of plums, blackberries and cassis; on the other, it's elegant and approachable supported by firm but pliant tannins. - 94 Points, Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2008
Great colour; a magical mix of fleshy and firmer fruit, great balance and mouthfeel; savoury tannins provide discipline. Cork. 14.5% Alc - 94 Points, James Halliday, The Australian Wine Companion 2008
