Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz 2006 - LIMITED STOCKS

NOTES

The Mount Langi vineyards are nestled between two dramatically beautiful mountain ranges on the southern edge of the Great Dividing Range. A 540 metre cliff face towers over the vineyard at Mount Langi Ghiran. Cliff Edge is made from fully mature vines which sit at the very edge of cool climate Shiraz territory. To infuse marvellous complexity and enhance the ruddy fruit, Mount Langi puts the Cliff Edge into new and older French and American oaks for eighteen months. Mixing of oaks from different regions, countries and coopers by winemaker Trevor Mast gives complexity to the wine. A blend of sweeter American oak with the tighter French barrels translates into many interesting combinations.

The site climate of the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyards produces wines which have tremendous depth and complexity, there are pepper and spice notes, but there are also all of the lush ripe fruit flavours running from cherry to liquorice which a top Rhone Valley maker would immediately recognise and appreciate. Matured under a selection of fine French and American oaks, coopered to winemaker Trevor Mast's specifications, the maturation of this Langi Ghiran was carefully timed to strike a balance of Shiraz fruit while offering a hint of sweet oak. Drink now for its elegance and youthful fruit, the wine shows balance and length as supported by the famous Ghiran structure.

TASTING NOTES

Fine aromas initially brooding open up to black cherry and tar, meatyness and spice, blackberries and anise, plums and fine coconutty oak. "From the first sniff, this wine makes you sit up and take notice. It is pure class in the mouth, with perfectly balanced ripe fruit and the trademark Langhi pepperiness entwined in a pot-puorri of spicy goodness that builds slowly to a wonderfully long finish. A memorable wine with a huge future!

REVIEWS

Powerful purple colour; the same seamless flow of fruit, oak and tannins as in the preceding vintages; the flavours range through red cherry, blackberry, spice, pepper, tamed by lively acidity and fine tannins.  Screwcap 14.5° alc. 96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion 2008

This is the duck’s guts. It is a fan-bloody-tastic wine. It’s firm, enclosed, calculated in what it’ll let you see for now, but the suggestions of kirsch, blueberry, dark cherry, cedarwood, sandalwood, graphite and strong black pepper are gloriously positioned, powered, and presented to your palate. It needs seven to ten years in the cellar, and will probably live for thirty. It is the wine Langi had to have.  BIG RED WINE OF THE YEAR 98 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Big Red Wine Book

Ghiran’s releases this year are like an entire Album of greatest hits and the Blue Label is the title track. Controlled, spicy and red fruited, this is probably the most compact yet expressive wines in our list this year, and it’s the finest wine ever made in Mount Ararat! Taste 2008, Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer
