NOTES
Low yielding, old and dry grown Barossa Valley vineyards are the cornerstone of Torbreck Vintners where traditional, manual winemaking methods and minimal intervention are combined to produce a variety of wines each year. The growers we work with have been selected for their unique vineyard sites and spartan approach to viticulture - Torbreck wines are concentrated in the vineyards, not in the winery.
Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. The roots however go back to 1992 when Dave, who was then working at the famed winery Rockford under Barossa legend Robert O'Callaghan, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. Near lifeless, he nurtured them back to health and was rewarded with small parcels of fruit that he made into wine.
'Dave Powell, unquestionably one of the world's finest wine producers, has an uncanny ability to discover old vine Barossa vineyards, and then secure long term contracts for their fruit.' - The Wine Advocate Issue #161 (October 2005) Robert Parker
TASTING NOTES
The colour, a deep dark red, leads to a nose with lifted sweet boysenberry and candied plum, floral oils and cured meats, with a refreshing mineral tone adding lift. The palate tantalises and sends your taste buds into a frenzy with blackberry, raspberry and cherry, licorice and peppery aromas soaring majestically like an eagle from the glass of this full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously-textured wine. Boasting superb purity, length and intensity, this beauty simply over-delivers, juicy and nicely balanced with an attractive interplay of red and dark berry flavors given focus by crisp but not strident acidity. Finishes tangy and bright, with no obtrusive tannins. A delicious introduction to the sexy house style at a very manageable price.
REVIEWS
Deep colour; a succulent, ripe and rich wine awash with black fruits and dark chocolate flavours; oak is incidental, as are tannins. Screwcap.14.5% alc. Rating 90 Drink 2015, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
This dark, juicy red and blackberry scented Shiraz is all about the Barossa with a ripe nose that pins itself fairly on the quality of the fruit , there’s barely any oak to speak of. Tannins are silky and it slips down in smooth gulps. Dangerously drinkable. 91 Points, Nicks Stock, Wine 100 – WBM Magazine October 2009
