NOTES
Coriole is situated in the hills north of the McLaren Vale township, in an area known as the Seaview sub region, where the soils are generally shallow. The rich terra rossa at the distinguished old fruit blocks which grow Shiraz for the Lloyd Reserve however, are quite deep, the roots are long, and the vines require little irrigation. The old hand pruned and handpicked parcels wind their way around the hills, making production of this exceptional Shiraz labour intensive. A coolish late summer in 2005 produced concentrated well structured wines. The Lloyd Reserve is produced in open fermenters with hand plunging and spends over twenty two months in small French oak.
Produced from a single vineyard at Coriole from vines planted in 1919 by winemaking pioneer Geoffrey Kay, Lloyd Reserve has earned the prestigious Langtons Wines of Australia Classification.
TASTING NOTES
Colour a rich red with robes of pure scarlet. This very concentrated wine exudes aromas like black fruits, bitter chocolate, coffee bean and cocoa, whilst the intense palate is satisfyingly rich, dense and long. Deep, luxuriant, voluminous bouquets of violets, cassis, dark plums, cloves and cinnamon. Very complex aromas of Christmas cake, sweet chocolate and vanilla oak, smokey bacon and peppercorn. On the tongue there's blackberry and plums, dark cherries and cassis, herbs and vanilla nougat, set against a backdrop of coconutty, cakey spice and chocolate. A rich very succulent palate with marshmallow-like tannins to consume when young or to cellar for many years.
REVIEWS
An even deeper colour and better hue than the Estate Grown; more profound in every respect; dark blackberry fruit flavours intermingle with chocolate and licorice; a very long, balanced palate. Vines planted 1919. Quality cork.14.5% alc 96 points James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009
