Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2008 - OUT OF STOCK
|
BACKGROUND
After having searched for a number of years for a block of land, both Domenic Torzi and Tracey Matthews settled on a 6-ha block at Mt McKenzie in the Eden Valley. The block, located in a hollow where the soil is meagre, did not deter them with respect to their patch being frost prone.
The second label produced from our Mt McKenzie grape yard. This label represents our rendition of Eden Valley Shiraz which is the non dried portion fruit that of my heritage wine Frost Dodger Shiraz and is aged in ex Frost Dodger barrels with the addition of two year old 70% French / 25 % American oak....so you can now order it with or with dry racking...seriously though you will have the opportunity to see the fruit at two different spectrums and be amazed at their individual deliciousness. Dominic Torzi
TASTING NOTES
The only problem is that there’s not much of it. It is a great wine at a great price – as good a bargain as I have seen in Australian wine over the past 10 years. Loaded with Flavour and style, it is the perfect red wine package. It tastes better than a lot of $35 reds. Please, get in fast – this will not last.
It’s as smooth as a big-lipped kiss, as satisfying as a pay rise, as full and fruity as a blackberry pie. Curranty, soft, long and stylish, its tannins, fruit complexity and oak full of ‘wow’ factor. Drink 2008 – 2014 94 points – Campbell Mattinson; The Big Red Wine Book
OTHER REVIEWS
Already lip-smacking with the lift of this relatively high vineyard but strong grainy mineral texture too. Very vibrant fruit. Wild yeast ferment, ex Frost Dodger barrels. A thoroughly handmade wine of the sort that some Europeans think does not exist outside Europe. 14% Drink 2007-09 16/20 Jancis Robinson
This is the first release of a second label for Torzi Matthews. The fruit comes off their Mount McKenzie vineyard, same as Frost Dodger, except there is no dried fruit component in this wine... Fragrant and aromatic with ripe dark cherry, plum, milk chocolate, pepper and exotic spices. On the palate full bodied with lush plum and berry fruit, pepper, spice and warm earthy slightly baked flavours. Excellent smooth powdery tannins (a hallmark of TM wines) and some edgy and obvious acidity that should settle down with more time in bottle. Lovely wine and super value. 91 points Gary Walsh
