Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot 2007

NOTES

Balnaves of Coonawarra have just been named James Hallidays' Winery of the Year in his just released 2008 Wine Companion. This follows on from Jeremy Oliver's Wine of the Year in 2006 and Pete Bissell's Qantas Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2005. A testament to the extraordinary work that goes into making the wines which consistently receive praise from all corners of the wine world.

TASTING NOTES

Vintage 2004 was cool and late ripening, producing medium bodied wines with excellent fruit intensity and depth. Cabernet Sauvignon (92.5%) and Merlot (7.5%) were combined and matured for 20 months in tight-grain French oak from Dargaud and Jaegle and Remond Cooperages prior to fining and bottling in February 2006.

A lifted nose of perfumed cassis fruit, complex dark fruit and integrated vanillan oak, with a touch of leafiness. Fine black fruit flavours dominate the palate, with good balance and a form textured finish. This wine will improve and soften with cellaring and will open up with decanting before drinking.

OTHER NOTES

Deeply flavoured, firm and fine grained, this is precisely the sort of wine that Coonawarra should be making more of. Its heady perfume of violets, small berries, plums and blackcurrants reveals smoky undertones of cedar/vanilla oak and a minty whiff of dried herbs. Full in weight, its palate-staining and sour edged flavours of intense dark cherry/berry fruit, tobacco and cedary oak are harmoniously supported by an assertive but pliant backbone of drying tannins - 95 Points Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual

Very deep colour, full bodied, dense and powerful; layers of cassis, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, and balanced but positive tannins. Drink: to 2018. 94 Points; James Halliday The Australian Wine Companion 2007
