NOTES

Woodlands vineyard was established in 1973 by David & Heather Watson on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, and was one of the first five vineyards to be planted in the Margaret River Wine Region with an aim to create wines to emulate the great vineyards of Bordeaux.

Woodlands came to fame early on with the release of our 1981 ‘Andrew’ Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine took out trophies for ‘Best Red Wine’ at the Perth Wine Show, the Mt Barker Wine Show, and the National Wine Show. This wine was the first from Margaret River to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy. Subsequent Cabernets made by David Watson won trophies and critical acclaim across the country.

Each year our Cabernet Sauvignon is named after a family member or family friend. This year our Cabernet Sauvignon is named ‘Rachael’. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec.

TASTING NOTES

This wine has an intense rich crimson colour. The nose shows lifted primary characters of mulberry, blackcurrant, cassis and mint enhanced by toasty French oak influences. The palate is rich, restrained and powerful. The sweet berry characters of the palate mirror the nose, while the tannins are well integrated and ripe. The finish is long and rich. Peak drinking from 2012-2024+.

OTHER REVIEWS

A beautifully elegant and structured cabernet of considerable class. Its floral perfume of sweet small black and red berries, fresh cedar//vanilla oak and undertones of dried herbs precedes a tightly focused palate of exceptional length and restrained power. Beneath its pristine expression of berry fruits and cedary oak lie nuances of dried herbs and forest floor, while its fine, superbly integrated tannins have a measured, polished quality. (Margaret River, 19.4/97, drink 2016-2024+) Jeremy Oliver

Still very tight, yet this is classic cabernet in structure and style. Powerful and very long. Aromas show leafy cabernet and a touch of tobacco, blackcurrant and savoury oak. The palate is tightly coiled and deeply concentrated. Exceptional wine. 96/100 - Ray Jordan's Wine Guide 2007/2008

Elegant power. Beautiful concentration and yet it stretches like a lazy cat through the mid palate, its fine tannin, fruit flavour and acid working like a sophisticated set of ligaments. Really, it’s quite divine. Full of effortless mulberry, cranberry and blackcurrant flavour, it shows signs of cedar, polished new oak – but mostly in a hand-in-glove fashion. It’s persistent on the finish too. Super. Drink: 2013-2021. 94 points." - Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront 02/08/2007
