Tim Smith Wines Barossa Shiraz 2005

NOTES

Tim Smith is a small Barossa based wine producer. With over 20 years experience working with some of the regions better known producers, and numerous overseas vintages mostly in Portugal, France and New Zealand, Tim draws on a truly international palette of experiences. His wine making approach has been described as having a passion for innovation, but retaining a strong sensibility for tradition.

TASTING NOTES

This is the 4th release of this wine, and I believe that the style is unashamedly going backwards to a more ‘traditional’ regional style. I’m using a higher percentage of American oak these days, but that’s not to say the wine is overtly oaky.

Dense vibrant purple red. The classic Barossa Shiraz descriptors of plums and spice are obvious here. Oak is complimentary, not in your face. Layered and dense, the fruit flavours are the traditional plums and some licorice, with a seamless mid palate structure. Oak provides some defining tannins to close, with out being drying or intrusive.

OTHER REVIEWS

This is the modern face of Barossan shiraz - or, perhaps, a lovely case of a great leap backwards. There's a trace of minty, coconutty oak on the nose, but the bulk of the wine is beautifully fine, fleshy, flavoursome and true, its easy mix of raspberried, plummy fruit a simple joy to drink. If you like the taste of Barossan shiraz grapes, this wine presents them in the most drinkable fashion.  91 points. Winefront.com.au

The 2005 Shiraz is fashioned from 40- to 90-year-old vines and sees a bit more new oak than its sibling. Its opaque purple color is followed by superb fruit on the attack, medium to full body, a beautifully pure, nicely nuanced personality, moderate alcohol (14.8%), and a slightly closed overall impression. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and consume it over the following decade. Robert Parker 90 points

Exciting purple hues and lifted aromas of spiced plums with lovely oak nuances underneath. It has a youthful exuberance to it, with fresh red fruits present in abundance and a deft tannin coat. Small scale wine making with big results. Delish. Adelaide Advertiser 93 points
