NOTES
Central Otago wines are fast gaining an international reputation for their quality and finesse. Carrick is truly a label for the region: the wines demonstrate the grace, the taste, and the distinctive style of Central Otago. Carrick, a name associated with the Bannockburn region is represented on our label by the Carrick Bend knot. The knot also depicts the bringing together of the Central Otago 'terroir' and our careful viticulture and winemaking practices.
The vineyards are all located in Bannockburn, on the Cairnmuir Terraces.
Cairnmuir was planted in 1994, in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris. It lies on a promontory, bounded by Lake Dunstan to the north and west, and the Bannockburn Inlet to the south. The vineyard is a mixture of gravels and sand, glistening with silica.
TASTING NOTES
The Unravelled Pinot Noir has good colour. The aroma is dominated by ripe berries and black cherries with notes of briar, French oak and blackberries. On the palate the flavours of blackberry and berry fruits are balanced by a contribution from good French oak. The tannins are fine and integrated giving good structure and persistence. By 2007 the fruit flavours will be the dominant feature giving a lush wine subtly underpinned by oak and tannin, evidence of some more serious winemaking and a modest aging potential.
OTHER REVIEWS
Designed to be ‘easy-drinking, laidback’, the 2006 vintage is a more ‘serious’ wine than you’d expect. Grown at Bannockburn and matured for eight months in French oak casks (20% new), it is youthful and sturdy, with moderately firm tannins and good density of cherry/plum flavours, warm and complex.
Best drinking 2008-09. 4 stars – Michael Cooper’s 2008 Buyer’s Guide to NZ Wines.
Here’s another second label whose aim, to quote the makers, “(was) to produce a very reasonably priced uncomplicated, upfront (“Unravelled!”), enjoyable wine, with recognisable black cherry fruit and ready to drink now”. That’s a good description of this vintage, with its attractive, fresh strawberry/dark cherry aromas and flavours. The wine is very varietal and slightly simple, yet has some depth.Recommended - Winewise Volume 24 Number 1, April 2008.
