Toolangi Pinot Noir 2008

NOTES

The Toolangi philosophy is to grow and source the very best grapes from the Yarra Valley and put them in the hands of the very best winemaker for the particular varietal. Our winemakers include Rick Kinzbrunner (Giaconda), Matt Harrop (Shadowfax) and Tom Carson (Yering Station).

The wines are principally made from estate grown fruit supplemented when needed with high quality fruit sourced from the Yarra Valley. Our viticulturalist, whilst maintaining our estate owned vineyards, is additionally responsible for the management of vineyards for outsourced fruit.

Toolangi produces wines with distinctive personalities, each wine showing a strong sense of place. Grapes from exceptional sites together with the experienced hand of the outstanding winemakers, subtly coming into play with each wine. The critical acclaim from some of the country's foremost wine writers confirms our approach.

2006 TOOLANGI PINOT NOIR

2006 was an extremely hot and compacted year in the Yarra Valley, with vintage coming several weeks earlier than usual. Attention to detail and the appropriate canopy manipulations were done, along with handpicking to maximize fruit quality across all varieties.

Hail in November and a 46 degree day on New Years Eve were notable natural events. The heat required an irrigation regime to maintain the vine health, canopy manipulation at the right times brought the fruit quality back to high standards with even ripeness and tannins a feature on all varieties. The Chardonnay was again a standout, with Pinot Noir and Shiraz also having great potential. Overall another good, albeit challenging vintage.

Selectively hand picked fruit from Coldstream, Yarra Valley, was used to make this wine. The cropping level was adjusted to 2.5 to 3 tonnes per acre. Made at Yering Station, this Pinot was aged in French oak barriques for 10 months.

TASTING NOTES

This Yarra Valley pinot really punches above its price. It has a silky texture with bright berry flavours of strawberry and blackberry, and a fine, savoury, long finish. Serve it with squab. Sally Gudgeon, The Age Sunday Life, 13 April 2008

A fresh young thing exuding morello cherries, red berries and a dry cherry pip astringency. Made at Yering Station. Jeni Port, The Age Epicure, 14 August 2007

I often like saying 'Toolangi' in a baritone African Chief style voice before tasting a glass. It's nearly as enjoyable as the wine, but not quite.

It offers up a gentle classic Yarra Pinot aromatic of red cherry, strawberry, spice and a bit of leaf mulch that leads into a light to medium bodied palate. The flavour is good with sweet red fruit and spice being the major players, accompanied by light dry tannins and clean soft acidity. It all flows along very nicely, is balanced and long, and drinks a treat from beginning to end. If you're out shopping for good Pinot under $25 then I'd pop this near the top of the list. Gary Walsh, Winorama, 8 May 2008

Bright and fragrant with delicious redcurrant and raspberry aromas and a whiff of funky undergrowth and black truffle. The lively palate is only medium weight but brimming with sweet fruit balanced by fine, silky tannins and a zing of fresh acidity. A delightful drink. Gourmet Traveller Wine, Qantas Inflight Guide to Wine, 2nd Edition

Another bright and assertive 2006 Yarra Pinot, showing fine fragrant notes, elegance and restraint. A well-crafted wine; complex but not obscured by winemaking. Elegant palate, with balanced ripe fruit presence, rich flowing tannins and a smoky twist through the finish. Terrific value! Nick Stock, WBM 100, May 2008
