Carrick Pinot Noir 2007 (Central Otago, NZ)

NOTES

Cairnmuir Vineyard was planted in 1994, the first vineyard to take advantage of the hot Cairnmuir Terraces in Bannockburn. The first plantings consisted of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The original vineyard has been supplemented by further plantings of another six hectares of Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. The grapes have already featured in several gold medal wines and the 2000 vintage was the first vintage under the new company's own label, Carrick.

CARRICK TASTING NOTES

The wine exhibits subdued aromas of red berries, briar and oak. On the palate it is rich, dense and concentrated. The wine is showing a similar evolution to the 2002 vintage, where black cherries, boysenberries and blackberries are the dominant fruit flavours. Like the 2002 we expect the wine to show complexity and refinement and to cellar well. The best parcels of grapes from selected sites in the vineyard are chosen for this wine. The fine integrated tannins give structure and length and it will develop into a seamless wine with opulent fruit, structure and power. 14% Alc

OTHER REVIEWS

Brooding, intense, meaty, peppery, slippery through the mouth and bold with fruit flavour.  Big pinot, but big on quality too.  Quartz-like tannin jagging through the finish.  Sweet, smoky aftertaste. Drink 2008-2014 93 points, Campbell Mattinson – The Big Red Wine Book.2008

The Bannockburn label has emerged as a regional classic.  The elegant, densly flavoured 2003, 2005 and 2006 vintages are all outstanding.  Matured for a year in French oak barriques (33% new), the 2006 is full and youthful in colour, with a fragrant, complex bouquet.  Concentrated, sweet-fruited and firm, it has plummy, cherryish flavours, with hints of spice and liquorice, in a warm, savoury style, finely poised for cellaring. 5 stars – Michael Cooper’s 2008 Buyer’s Guide to NZ Wines.

Intense, spicy aromas with fruit a little reticent at this stage.  Very youthful and tightly structured, with a very finely textured palate.  The long, fine grained tannins demand cellaring.  This should turn out to be a top wine. Highly Recommended. - Winewise Volume 24 Number 1, April 2008.
