Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2007

NOTES

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock.  After five generations of growing grapes, winemaker and sixth generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is sourced from a single vineyard, located on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek in the Northern Barossa Valley.  The vineyard consists of shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay and limestone, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz vines.  The wine is fermented on skins for approximately seven days and it is gently basket pressed between one to two baumé allowing fermentation to complete in barrels for added complexity.  Greenock Shiraz is matured in a combination of new and used American and French oak hogsheads for eighteen to twenty two months prior to bottling.

TASTING NOTES

The Greenock Shiraz 2007 is black in colour with a dark red rim. The bouquet is extremely vibrant with aromas of dark roses, plum, Christmas cake, cocoa and sweet tobacco. The palate is full-bodied and fills the entire mouth with flavour.  Tannins are ripe and soft, with stylish definition.  Flavours of red and black fruits are supported by well integrated subtle oak characters.  The wine finishes with beautiful pure fruit intensity that lingers for a long time.  This is a classy, refined wine with a harmonious balance that will reward time in the cellar. The wine was matured for eighteen months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.

OTHER REVIEWS

Kalleske… 5 star winery… outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality…” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2008 Edition

The Kalleske lads are at it again. Their Greenock vineyards have dished up an exciting 06 shiraz, worked gently into youthful shape by winemaker Troy. Kalleske’s fruit is full of vibrant character, the wines always look impressive on release, here there’s classic ripe blackberry and red berry fruits augmented with some sweet smelling oak and gentle spicy complexity. Big flavours but not overdone, dark cherries and black fruits rule the roost with attractive sweetness. Tannins are supple, juicy and deeply ripe, chocolate-like texture stirred smoothly through rich fruit flavour and twisting savoury through the finish. 93 points; Nick Stock, The Adelaide Review

"Powerful and very youthful. This is top rung for this label. Another Kalleske classic!" -Gary Collins

Densely coloured, this has all the hallmarks of a big brooding Barossa Shiraz in the glass. Ripe berries and dark cherry fruits lead the way, charming ripe tannins add chocolate-like texture and carry impressive length, twisting savoury through the finish.
