NOTES
After searching Australia, fifth-generation winemaker Steve Lubiana selected Tasmania for his cool-climate vineyard. Overlooking the spectacular tidal estuary of the Derwent River at Granton, 20 km’s north of Hobart, Stefano Lubiana Wines remains a family owned and operated business, focused on producing small quantities of hand crafted, cool climate, Tasmanian wines.
First planted to the Burgundy varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir during the spring of 1991, the vineyard has expanded over the years to its current area of 18 hectares of closely spaced vines. Plantings also comprise of Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Nebbiolo.
The Primavera has evolved into a close sibling of the flagship Estate Pinot, made possible through better vineyard management, a reduction in cropping levels plus a delay in release dates, which has allowed the wine to develop more fully in French oak barriques under the Lubiana cellars. All these improvements have been achieved without compromising the balance and drink-ability of this limited production wine.
TASTING NOTES
The most attractive characteristics of this wine are its fruitiness, vibrancy, juiciness and tangy dry finish. It’s laced with fresh elegant strawberry and cherry flavours, reminiscent of our earlier versions of this wine. Perfect cool, yet dry growing conditions have contributed to this wine’s natural power, length, complexity and texture. Seasoned oak has been used so as not to dominate the overall feminine structure making this wine truly drinkable.
Vibrant crimson red with garnet tinges, the nose explodes with aromas of vanilla, raspberries and red berry fruit following on with lovely spice, cherry and hints of cream. The palate is pristinely clean with dark plum and spice characters joined by a hint of mocha. The palate also shows great intensity and is rich and full and loaded with dark berry fruits, plum and black ripe cherries. A good balance between raspberry and plum, natural acidity, and seasoned nutmeg, cedary oak.
OTHER REVIEWS
Bright crimson red. Fragrant and juicy with an array of raspberry, strawberry and cranberries, a little bark and earth with a dab of vanilla oak. Sprightly and fresh in a Beaujolais sort of way. On the palate light to medium bodied with juicy summer berry, cherry and cranberry fruit, vanilla and some slightly earthy characters. Dry and crunchy with fine sappy tannins and a dry finish (although not expansive or long). A delicious wine. 91 Points, Gary Walsh, Winorama
