NOTES
After searching Australia, fifth-generation winemaker Steve Lubiana selected Tasmania for his cool-climate vineyard. Overlooking the spectacular tidal estuary of the Derwent River at Granton, 20 km’s north of Hobart, Stefano Lubiana Wines remains a family owned and operated business, focused on producing small quantities of hand crafted, cool climate, Tasmanian wines.
First planted to the Burgundy varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir during the spring of 1991, the vineyard has expanded over the years to its current area of 18 hectares of closely spaced vines. Plantings also comprise of Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Nebbiolo.
TASTING NOTES
Our Non Vintage Brut is crafted from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and has been made using the traditional methode champenoise technique (matured on lees in the bottle for a minimum of
18 months and hand disgorged). Oxidative juice handling, barrel maturation and the addition of reserve wine help construct its generous profile.
A visually attractive wine in the glass, displaying, plenty of creamy mousse and tiny fine beads. The nose offers soft yeasty characters with hints of elegant lemon and honey blossom. In the mouth fine dry bubbles give way to a toasty, nutty luxurious palate finishing with lingering fresh citrus.
OTHER REVIEWS
‘In her web page write up on the dinner, however she described the Stefano Lubiana NV sparkler as quite superb. “At the price I have yet to try such a close comparison to good aged Non- Vintage Champagne.”’ Graeme Phillips on Jancis Robinson (UK Wine Writer) - The Mercury,
From the Apple Isle comes this delicious traditional methode champenoise with a light gold colour and fine bead. Its bouquet has aromas of cream, nuts, honey and toast; its finish is dry and clean. It also has a ‘vigorous mousse,’ which is wine speak for lots of lovely bubbles. Naren Young- Jetstar Inflight Magazine,
Floral and toasty with a beautiful subtle yeast influence. This is a classy wine of great style and elegance from Tasmania. Less austere than the vintage version and delightfully drinkable. Ray Jordan- The West Australian,
Indulge Yourself. Stefano Lubiana’s Tassie bubblies are among the best of the Apple Isles growing number of fine sparkling wines. The NV almost has a French accent. Very slightly pink, it’s full of patisserie-like, yeasty and nutty characters, and appley fruit, all very rich, complex and dry. Excellent. Ageing: no Food Ideas: little savoury pastries, chicken liver mousse or brioche Rating: 5 Stars Epicure Uncorked, Ralph Kyte-Powell
Best Sparkling
“The colour is faintly pink and the bouquet is a complex mix of smoke, brioche and Vegemite, with substantial age. It’s rich and satisfying in the mouth, dry and clean to finish. More weight than delicacy, and good balance. Best within two years.” Food: Mushroom Pastries The Sydney Morning Herald Put to the test – Six top Drops, Huon Hook
