James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion 2008
James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2008 is Australia's No. 1 guide to wineries and wines in this country. Poverty Hill Wines is very proud to have been selected as one of the "10 Best New Wineries in Australia" and awarded 5Stars.
James Halliday said that "the quality of the wine is - quite simply - inspiring."
NOTES
A group of friends with over a 100 years combined experience in the wine industry came together in 2002 and created Poverty Hill Wines.
When you add up all the years of experience that the guys from Poverty Hill have, one can see how and why such great wines are being produced by such a small boutique winery. The great thing about the team is that each person has a specific role to play and yet they all can combine their skills to get involved in all aspects of the vineyard, winery and brand.
TASTING NOTES
The soil at Rob Buck’s vineyard is ancient volcanic, red-brown loam. The vines can only grow as far as the limited amount of water we apply will allow. The grapes were allowed to achieve full maturity and the wine shows the intensity and palate richness which has made this area famous.
The grapes were crushed into small open fermenters where they were plunged to wet the skins twice a day. The fermentation was kept below 23 degrees and required 20 days to finish. After being basket pressed the wine was aged in 1-3 year old French oak barrels for 24 months.
Very deep crimson to black in colour, the nose is rich, complex and earthy, showing the Granite characters of the surrounding rocks. Smooth while dense and complex, it displays a fantastic long palate which has amazing richness and smoothness.
The rich complexity of this wine is well suited to partner similar rich dishes such as Osso Bucco or Lamb Ragout.
OTHER REVIEWS
Abundant bright red fruits and hints of spice and mint; although slightly dry on the finish, has good overall flavour. 90 Points, James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion 2009
