THE PLANTAGENET STORY

Plantagenet Wines was the first winery in the Great Southern wine growing region of Western Australia. From small beginnings Plantagenet Wines is now one of the most well respected Western Australian wineries consistently producing quality wines for nearly 40 years. Fruit for many of the wines is sourced from the oldest vineyards in the region.

The winery is located in the heart of Mt Barker Township which is 350kms south of the Western Australian capital of Perth. The vineyards are located to the south and west of the township. The climate is considered cool to moderate with rainfall around 700m annually.

GREAT SOUTHERN REGION

The Great Southern region is the largest, in area, of all wine regions in Australia and produces 37% of wine grapes produced in Western Australia. The five sub-regions of Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and the Porongurups have vastly different climatic conditions which means a visit to the Great Southern can be an exciting experience as the visitor moves about this diverse region.

In the late 1950s the Western Australian Government of the time was concerned that the failing Apple Industry in the Great Southern would create a huge problem for the farming Industry in the Great Southern. They invited Professor Olmo a world class Viticulturist from California and Dr. Penfold Hyland from NSW, to visit WA to investigate the Southern Regions to see whether there was a possibility of starting a Grape growing industry. And as they say, the rest is now history.
